Pink Sands Of Elafonissi

Elafonissi is translated from Greek as "a Deer Island". This small island is located approximately 100 m from the Crete coast. The beach of Elafonissi is famous for its sand with pink inclusions and crystal transparent waters.

Chrisoskalitissa monastery is closed for reconstruction.

"Chrisoskalitissa" means "Golden step". According to the legend those who are sinless can see the Golden Step in the basement of the stairs.

In the history of Elafonissi not all the moments are joyous. Thus in 1824 this little island became the place of the mass murder of 850 children and women by Turks. The women and kids hid on the island when the Turkish invaders set up a camp on the shore. They found the women and children and killed them. On the highest peak of Elafonissi there is a memorial in memory of the dead. And the legend says that the sand was painted red with their blood. Till today this pink color of the sand reminds of those tragic days.

However, in fact, the sand has become pink as a result of mixture of shells and coral chips.
