A Visit To The UN Headquarters

The UN headquarters at New York is a complex on spacious ground. Even though it is in New York, it is considered to be in international territory. It was completed in 1952. The headquarters appears in many Hollywood movies since it is a place where International decisions are made. Protests and gatherings are also a part of life in this complex. People come from all corners of the world to protest against and support various interests. Tourists are also part of the pilgrims that frequent this complex. Currently the UN headquarters building is a pitiful site since it is under repair.

In front of the building are the 192 flags of the member states of the organization.

This sphere is a look alike to the one located at the Vatican by the sculptor Arnaldo Pomodoro. One can start collecting photos of them since they are not only in New York and the Vatican. Such have been constructed in other major cities too.

This photo is a must have for anyone who has been to the UN Headquarters.

On your way the the Grand Central.

The Chrysler Building has a height of 319 meters.

The Grand Central itself. The square reminds one of the blockbuster movie "I'm Legend" starring Will Smith.

One of the counters.

Funny, you wonder if these phone booths are still operational.

Back at the UN headquarters. The guide explains the history of the UN. Some of the different head gear on display.

School in a box. Has all the necessities for one to start learning once you open the box. 2000 such boxes were sent to Japan after the earthquake.

Inside it looks like a small sporty school in a box.

The second part of the tour starts at the Conference Hall. It takes about one hour. The UN established 6 official languages including Russian. Besides there are the so-called working languages used during translation of speeches delivered in the official languages.

One floor below is the meeting room of the Security Council. The five permanent Council are Russia, USA, UK, France and China. The have veto powers.
