Ancient Fortezza Of Crete

The building of the citadel was finished in 1580 and in 1646 it got owned by Turks.

Various buildings were erected in the fortress: barracks, powder depots, water reservoirs and a house of a Venetian military leader.

In the centre was Chapel of St. Nicolas (1583) that Turks rebuilt into Mosque of Ibrahim Khan. To the chapel there was attached a dome that is preseved till our days.

Monastery of St. Catherine

Inside art exhibitions are held.

The only preserved detail of the mosque decoration.

The fortress was exceptionally made for Venetian invaders, not for Cretans. It should be noticed that inside there was only one Catholic temple, no Orthodox churches at all.

Wonderful views at Rethymnon and the sea open from the fortress.
